The U.S. Bank and the Whigs
Jackson and the Democrats worked to win a majority in the Virginia legislature in 1835. In those days, the state legislature elected (and could expel) its U.S. senators.
John Tyler resigned his Senate seat in 1836 rather than follow the instructions of the Virginia legislature to erase from the Senate Journal the censure against Jackson for removing deposits from the U.S. Bank. How did this incident bring Tyler to the Whig's attention as a potential party candidate?
