Vassar Female College was chartered in January 1861. It opened in September 1865 with 353 students and thirty faculty members, most of them women. Now coed, Vassar continues to be ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the U.S. Graduates include Edna St. Vincent Millay (1917), the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry; Helen C. Putnam (1878), one of the first woman gynecologists; and Vicki Miles-LaGrange (1974), the first African American woman to be sworn in as a U.S. Attorney.Think about what it must have been like to be one of the first women in the country able to go to college.
